What's Happening at Cedar Crest College
SATORI, Cedar Crest College Celebrate Women Composers on September 10
SATORI, a mixed chamber music ensemble of winds, strings and piano based in the Lehigh Valley, will play a special concert featuring music from women composers on Friday, September 10, at 7 p.m. in Tompkins College Center’s Samuels Theatre on the campus of Cedar Crest College. The concert, which is sponsored by the Gender Studies Program at Cedar Crest College, is free and open to the public.
The event will feature music spanning the centuries and will include selections from such classical composers as Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn, as well as contemporary works by Thea Musgrave, Madeleine Dring and Hilary Tann. LuAnn Fletcher, Ph.D., professor of English at Cedar Crest College and head of the gender studies program, said the concert fits nicely with the mission of the College, which focuses on liberal arts and women’s leadership.
“The Gender Studies Program at Cedar Crest supports academic and cultural programming that considers questions of gender expression, inequity, advocacy and education,” Fletcher said. “It connects the academic study of gender dynamics and a historical awareness of the influence of gender on human society with real-life experiences beyond the classroom.”
The name SATORI is derived from a Zen term suggesting the coming together of separate parts to form a whole, a perfect metaphor for chamber music. Nora Suggs, artistic director for SATORI, said the ensemble played a similar concert earlier this year at Vassar College in New York, and was eager to bring this concert featuring the work of women composers closer to home. She said Cedar Crest College—like Vassar a women’s college—is an ideal locale for such a show.
“It’s a thrill for members of the ensemble to be able to play this particular concert in their community for an audience that we anticipate will be highly receptive to celebrating the achievement of women composers,” Suggs said.
