Cedar Crest College celebrates 150 years of developing and preparing tomorrow’s women leaders at kick-off event for yearlong celebration
When Cedar Crest College was founded in 1867, the visionaries that saw a need to educate Allentown’s young women might never have imagined what it would become 150 years later. Today it is a premier college dedicated to educating the next generation of women leaders that prepares students for life in the global community, and has a growing school of adult and graduate education that serves both women and men.
On Thursday afternoon January 19 the college will celebrate its sesquicentennial at a kick-off event entitled “On the Crest of the Future” and will announce a series of special events taking place throughout 2017. (Snow date for the kick-off is Wednesday, January 25.)
A reception with a celebratory sparkling cider toast given by President Carmen Twillie Ambar will be held in Canova Commons from 3 – 4 p.m., followed by the Sesquicentennial Faculty Lecture Series from 4 – 5 p.m. in the 1867 Room. Known for its accomplished nursing program, the session’s theme is “Nursing’s Seat at the Global Table: Leading from Beside” and will be presented by Dr. Wendy Robb, the Hazel and Walter May Nursing Endowed Chair. (A speaker bio can be found here) Attendees will also have the opportunity to contribute to the On the Crest of the Future Community Art Project during the event. RSVP by emailing email@example.com or call 1-888-902-3327.
"As we enter our 150th year, we do so with the intent of building a stronger, more profound community, one prepared for the dynamism of the higher education landscape in the next century,” said President Carmen Twillie Ambar. “We are excited to welcome the community to Cedar Crest throughout this yearlong celebration.”
Other “On the Crest of the Future” 2017 event highlights include:
- March 24 - Cedar Crest will host “Visualizing Higher Education in 2027 - A Conference Exploring the Future of Higher Education” for which it will invite the higher education community to gather and explore how today’s issues will shape their institutions in the next decade. With prominent speakers and breakout sessions covering a variety of topics, the conference is meant for educators, administrators and students. Learn More:Visualizing Higher Education in 2027
- October 5 - journalist and broadcaster Lisa Ling will be the featured speaker at Cedar Crest’s Reimert Lecture Series.
- October 20 - the college will host its 150th All-Class Reunion and Gala with special family activities, and a lecture and reception with Dr. Afaf I. Meleis.
- Ongoing - The On the Crest of the Future Community Art Project is also part of the yearlong celebration. Cedar Crest Art Professor Jill Odegaard is working with students, alumni and the general public to make custom-designed paper on which they can share a special memory of the college or a hope for its future. The paper pages will be compiled into a memory book to become a keepsake of the 150-year anniversary.
