CEDAR CREST BASKETBALL FALLS TO GWYNEDD-MERCY IN PAC OPENER – OAKES NOTCHES FIFTH DOUBLE-DOUBLE OF THE SEASON
Allentown, PA (November 29, 2007) – Sophomore Kelly Oakes posted her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds, but it would not be enough as the Cedar Crest basketball team dropped a 79-65 decision to previous Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Champion Gwynedd-Mercy College in both teams PAC opener on Thursday evening in Lees Gymnasium.
The Falcons, who fell by a score of 100-24 last season to Gwynedd, came out with a vengeance holding as much as a five point advantage with 16:01 remaining in the first half off of back-to-back jumpers by Oakes and freshman Keri Lasky.
The game saw two ties and three lead changes before the Griffins’ gained the lead for good at the 8:51 mark on a pair of free throws by Bridget Gibson. Lasky, who led all scorers with a career-high 24 points, brought the game within one with 5:46 remaining in the first half on a set of free throws before Gwynedd went on a 19-10 run to go into the locker room with a 47-35 advantage.
The Griffins’ opened the second half on a 10-0 run before Lasky opened the scoring for the Falcons at the 15:52 mark on a pass from Oakes. Cedar Crest cut the lead, 77-63, off of two steals and two made layups by freshman Lauren Seale, who added a career-high with 15 points on the night.
Junior Sarah Campbell posted eight points for the Falcons; while Kristy Cramp led Gwynedd-Mercy with 23 points and teammates Lauren Rosar amd Bridget Morrin added 12 points respectively.
Cedar Crest falls to 2-3 on the season, while the Griffins’ improve to 3-2. The Falcons will travel to PAC opponent Cabrini College on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
