Explore your passion for literature and your talent for writing while working with published authors and poets.
As a student in the English major at Cedar Crest College, you will explore classic and contemporary works of American, British and world literature. You’ll develop your own creativity and writing skills–all in a supportive, challenging setting.
You will also engage in passionate discussions about literature and your own work, enabling you to grow as a writer, critical thinker and person.
This program will prepare you for a career in one or more of the following areas:
Cedar Crest students who major in English may concentrate their studies in either literature or writing, or combine an English major with a co-major in secondary education.
Literature. Read the best the English language has to offer. As a student focused on interpreting literature, you’ll build critical thinking skills and sensitivity to cultures other than your own. Students with a literature concentration are well prepared for graduate study in English and other fields, including law and medicine, or careers in business, media, and public relations.
Writing. Explore the joys of language and the limitless challenge and reward that a career in writing offers. As a student with a writing concentration, you will study and practice multiple genres--including nonfiction, fiction and poetry--before choosing one genre to focus on for advanced study. Students with a writing concentration are well prepared for graduate study in creative writing or careers in publishing, journalism, and more.
Secondary Education Co-Major. As an educator, you will be able to share your passion for literature with young minds. Cedar Crest offers an English co-major in conjunction with the education department, helping students prepare for a career in secondary education.
