Peter Streckfus is the author of two poetry books: Errings, winner of Fordham University Press’s 2013 POL Editor’s Prize, and The Cuckoo, which won the Yale Series of Younger Poets competition in 2003. His poems appear in journals such as The Chicago Review, The New Republic, Seattle Review, and Slate. His awards include fellowships and grants from the Breadloaf Writers’ Conference, the Peter S. Reed Foundation, the University of Alabama, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the American Academy in Rome where he is a Fellow in Literature. He lives in the Washington DC area with his wife, poet and translator Heather Green, and is on the faculty of the Creative Writing Program at George Mason University and Cedar Crest College’s Pan-European MFA in Creative Writing.

Mindy Mejia will visit Cedar Crest College on Thursday, November 16th as part of the English Program's Visiting Writers Series. Mejia is a fiction writer, ex-finance manager, weekend jogger, wife, and mother of two. She writes what she likes to read--contemporary, plot driven novels that deliver both entertainment and substance. The author of The Dragon Keeper and Everything You Want Me to Be, she earned her MFA from Hamline University and makes her home in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. About The Dragon Keeper, a required read for freshman Honors students, a reviewer for Global Animal remarked, “Mejia beautifully tackles the subjects of animal captivity, endangered animals, human-animal connections, and even evolution. She manages to eloquently bring these subjects together in a realistic fashion while also unfolding a dramatic story. The amount of research that went into the novel is impressive and keeps the story grounded in science.” 

Mejia will be speaking with Honors students and writing students as part of her visit; she will offer a public reading of her work at 7:00 p.m. in Oberkotter 1, in the Oberkotter Center for Health and Wellness. Mejia's reading is free and open to the public; her visit is sponsored by the English Program, the Honors Program, the First Year Experience, and by Cedar Crest Cultural Programming.
