College Honors Four Accomplished Grads

Here are this year's Alumnae Award and Washburne Award winners, honored for their service to college and community. Read more about them in our Press Release.

  • Award for Humanitarianism: Juanelle "Wannie" Fulcoly Mochel '72 of Doylestown, Pa., earned her B.A. in sociology and B.S. in secondary social studies, then "found her passion in teaching learning disabled students" in a variety of settings. Diagnosed with a deadly form of cancer in 1999, Mochel did more than survive–she and her sister worked with the American Cancer Society's Bike-A-Thon to raise more than $110,000. Mochel is also a long-time community volunteer.
  • Award for Volunteerism: Kathleen Horkay Baas '75 of Danville, Pa., earned a B.S. in nursing and began her career as an R.N. Her second child was diagnosed with profound autism, which led to years of meeting with specialists, late-night research, and battles to get her son the care he needed. Horkay Baas became an advocate for families touched by autism, founding a camp for them (CampEmerge) in 1999. She currently works as a nurse and nursing instructor.
  • Award for Volunteerism: Linda Vola '72 of Beech Island, S.C., earned her B.A. in English and secondary education and had a distinguished career with Bell and AT&T for many years. Despite suffering from a debilitating illness, she has cared for ill family members and worked tirelessly for foster children and animals. She's served on many community boards and committees; and for her beloved Cedar Crest College she has mentored Career Day students and been a class correspondent for more than three decades.
  • Constance Parkes Washburne Award for service to the College: Nan Louise Barry '72 of Kinnelon, N.J., an English and education major, shared her love of reading with generations of children as an award-winning public school teacher. For Cedar Crest, she has served as Alumnae Executive Board director and as class president since 2002. Other positions: class reunion chair, class agent, Alumnae Scholarship and Alumnae Council chair, admissions volunteer, and life member of the Alumnae Association.
