Welcome to the Master of Science in Forensic Science program. I can best describe this master degree program in three themes: scientific competency, professionalism, and innovation.
First, the comprehensive curriculum in forensic science and dedicated faculty will ensure that you will develop a level of scientific competency necessary for success in a modern crime laboratory. Our approach has led our graduates to careers in such diverse areas as forensic DNA testing, controlled substances and toxicological testing, and crime scene investigation. As the result of receiving in-depth instruction in several forensic science-related areas, our students have the type of versatility that is very attractive to forensic science employers. The knowledge obtained by our students is the reason that Cedar Crest College has placed in the top three nationally in eight of the last ten years on a forensic science assessment exam available to all forensic science academic programs.
Second, the program and institution is committed to providing you with a culture of professionalism essential for career advancement and leadership. For instance, you will learn how to properly testify in court and how to speak at a scientific conference.
Third, our emphasis on graduate-level research will teach you the importance of innovation in the development of critical thinking skills, and of contributing to the development of such a dynamic and growing discipline. Each year many of our students demonstrate this by presenting original research at regional and national forensic science conferences. Several students have also been first authors on publications in peer-reviewed journals. Employers have often commented that students who have a background in innovation are more successful in the workplace than those who don’t.
As you view our website, you will notice that several of our students and graduates are highlighted as they describe how each of these themes has contributed to their success as a student and as a graduate. If you are ready for a challenge, then this program is for you.
Please contact either me or any member of the faculty if we can help you in any way. We also encourage you to visit our campus and meet with the faculty and students and to see for yourself why we think that our program is helping to create the next generation of leaders in forensic science.
