How Cedar Crest Offers Classes

In person or face-to-face: Instructor and students attend class in person. The syllabus, assignments and gradebook are in Canvas. Canvas may have course materials posted, but all instruction takes place face-to-face in a classroom setting.

Online-Asynchronous: Instructor and students meet for class entirely using technology; the course has no on campus (in person) attendance requirement. Asynchronous participation means that the instructor posts course materials and students. Asynchronous participation means that the instructor posts course materials and students participate individually according to the terms on the syllabus.

Online-Synchronous: Instructor and students meet for class entirely using technology; the course has no on campus (in person) attendance requirement. Synchronous classes indicate that the instructor and students will participate in the class at the same day and time but using technology to meet. Asynchronous participation means that the instructor posts course materials and students Online-Synch participate individually according to the terms on the syllabus.

Hybrid: Instructor and students meet 50% or less of the scheduled course time online in an asynchronous or synchronous format. The remainder of the required course meeting time is face-to-face in a classroom setting. The instructor uses Canvas for the basic course requirements, and materials used for the online class meetings are in Canvas. The course syllabus clearly outlines the expectations Hybrid for in person and online student participation in class.

Hyflex: Instructor delivers the course material in person and online simultaneously. Each class session and learning activity occurs in-person, synchronously online, and asynchronously online. Students decide how to participate. A student may elect to take the class in a combination of formats. The course syllabus designates participation requirements for all the formats. Student must inform the Hyflex instructor of their participation intentions.

Low-Residency: Online classes with some in person instruction.
