Cedar Crest officially welcomed the Class of 2030 during its Open Door Ceremony on Aug. 20, a 103-year-old tradition that marks the beginning of each student’s Cedar Crest journey and symbolizes opening the door to a college education filled with new possibilities.
As part of this beloved rite of passage, each student crosses the stage with a daisy in hand and shares their name and hometown—a moment that celebrates individuality and marks the beginning of finding their voice, claiming their identity, and being seen for who they are.
The daisy, Cedar Crest’s official flower, also carries special meaning: its white petals represent the traditions and values students embrace during their time at Cedar Crest, while its golden center symbolizes the unique qualities and potential within each student.
This year’s class, the largest first-year undergraduate class in 20 years, arrived from far and wide, representing 17 U.S. states and 10 countries. Together, they bring new stories, experiences, and perspectives to a community connected by tradition.
“Cedar Crest College opens the door to what’s next: to new opportunities, new communities, and a new sense of belonging,” said Keishla Garcia ’27, Student Government Association President and Student Trustee of the College.
For over a century, traditions like Open Door have connected generations of Cedar Crest students, creating a shared sense of community while welcoming each new class into the fold.
“For the Class of 2030 and our incoming transfer students, today marks the beginning of a transformative journey,” said President Elizabeth Meade. “Over the next year and the ones to come, you will forge lasting friendships, explore and discover new areas of interest, be empowered to lead, and gain the skills and confidence you need to soar.”
Next came the moment everyone had been waiting for: the big reveal of the Sophomore Year Expedition (SYE), a weeklong study-abroad adventure filled with service, culture, learning, new experiences, and memories that will last a lifetime—all at no cost to students.
Alumnae Auditorium buzzed with excitement and anticipation as Madrid, Spain, was revealed as the Class of 2030’s SYE destination.
“I will be counting the days, as I’m sure you will be too!” exclaimed President Meade.
