This February, the Performing Arts Department at Cedar Crest College presents “Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic,” a 2015 original comedy play by New York-based playwright Matt Cox.

Directed by Jarrod Yuskauskas, “Puffs” details a certain wizard school where a certain boy wizard attended…only, this story is not about him, but rather the Puffs, who just so happened to be there at the same time. A tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world, this witty parody follows a group of overlooked Puffs, led by Wayne Hopkins, on their journey through seven years at a magical school.

“It very much plays into the mythos of a certain series of books about a school of Magic and Magic, yet it turns it on its head in a very wacky, sometimes filthy way, and a really fun way,” says Director Jarrod Yuskauskas. “In its essence, though, it has a strong impact and there is unexpected heart to it.”

Puffsoffers a fresh and fun take on a familiar magical tale, pairing sharp humor with a sincere story about friendship, belonging, and self-discovery.

“It’s such a fun experience and so funny; no matter how many times I see this show, I always find something new in it,” says Student Stage Manager Arlo Guzman.

Key elements in “Puffs” sure to provide frivolous fun are the interactive cast, with most members playing anywhere from two to 11 parts, a puppet show in the middle of the first and second acts, and an impressive score with over 100 musical cues throughout.

“The score is amazing. It is very cinematic and incredibly emotional; it’s really quite beautiful,” says Jarrod.

“Almost every spell has a sound that accompanies it. There are all sorts of spells [throughout the play], all sorts of magic, and various monster and scary noises,” says Arlo.

Offering a unique look at the underdogs, “Puffs” will surely be a hilariously heartfelt, romping good time, no matter how many times you see it.

“Joyful, beautiful, whimsical, hysterical, and just, wow,” says Arlo with a smile, attempting to summarize “Puffs” in just a few words. “I don’t think there are strong enough words to express how lovely this show is.”

“Puffs” is rated R age 17+ for strong adult language and content. It will be performed February 19-21 at 7 p.m. and February 22 at 2 p.m. in Samuels Theatre, Tompkins College Center, Cedar Crest College. Tickets can be purchased online here.
