Learn Abroad your Sophomore Year

Cedar Crest College Receives NAFSA’s 2023 Senator Paul Simon Spotlight Award

See Where your Education Can Take You

As part of your cultural experience at Cedar Crest College, we see you exploring and learning in another country. The best part? We cover the cost of a global travel experience for every sophomore. We call it the Carmen Twillie Ambar Sophomore Expedition. You’ll call it life-changing.

Where will you go?

Your Sophomore Expedition destination will be revealed during your August Orientation. You may learn you’ll be zip lining through the rainforest, riding camel-back across the desert, or studying ancient Greek architecture! We believe immersing yourself in a global experience opens doors that you never thought possible.

What is the Sophomore Expedition?

The Sophomore Expedition is a signature experience at Cedar Crest College designed to enhance global awareness, leadership, and academic connections.  It offers all full-time, traditional, second-year students the opportunity to participate in a college-sponsored, short-term study abroad trip at no additional cost for travel, lodging, programming, or meals.

Who is eligible to participate?

To be eligible, students must:

  • Be a full-time, degree-seeking, traditional sophomore (typically in their second year at Cedar Crest) enrolled for at least two full semesters before the Expedition.
  • Transfer students who matriculate at Cedar Crest with Sophomore standing and begin in the Fall semester may participate in the SYE in the next immediate Spring semester.
  • Be in good financial and disciplinary standing.
  • Participate in all required preparation workshops and activities.
  • Meet all passport and travel requirements.

Where do students travel for the Expedition?

The destination changes each year and is chosen to offer cultural, historical, and educational value. Past destinations have included Brazil, Greece, England, Costa Rica, Morocco, Italy, Ireland, and Portugal. The location is announced at the Open Door ceremony during Orientation each August.

When does the Sophomore Expedition take place?

The trip usually occurs during Spring Break (early March), but certain locations might require different timing.  Specific dates are announced well in advance.

Do I need a passport?

Yes, and students are responsible for the cost. All participants must have a valid passport that meets the destination country’s entry requirements. Students are encouraged to apply for or renew passports early, as processing times can vary.

What costs are covered?

Cedar Crest College covers:

  • Round-trip airfare
  • Lodging and accommodations
  • All meals included in the itinerary
  • Transportation for program-related excursions and activities
  • Entry fees for program-related excursions and activities
  • Travel and medical insurance

What costs are students responsible for?

Passport fees.  The cost of obtaining a new passport is approximately $165 or renewing a passport is approximately $130.  Please note this does not include the cost of required photos, which are usually around $15.

Souvenirs, personal expenses, or any meals not included in the itinerary.

Past participants report an average of $200.

What kind of activities can I expect during the Expedition?

Activities vary by location, but typically include:

  • Cultural tours and academic visits
  • Experiential learning or community engagement
  • Educational lectures or guided tours
  • Group reflection and team-building sessions

Is there an academic component to the trip?

Yes.  Each student takes a 3-credit, semester-long Sophomore Expedition course which takes place during the semester of the trip.  Students will have a choice of various courses, all of which meet the Global Studies LAC requirement for graduation.

Students are expected to attend all classes before and after the trip.

In addition, students are required to attend information sessions, complete an accountability exercise and required forms, and participate in pre-departure orientation.

What if I have dietary, accessibility, or health needs?

The College makes every effort to address individual needs. Each student submits a form that lists medical conditions, medications, dietary preferences, and allergies, which is then shared with the travel provider.  Be sure to communicate any concerns during the application process so that appropriate arrangements can be considered in advance.  The college’s ability to make modifications varies by country.

Can I opt out or delay participation?

Participation is not mandatory but strongly encouraged. The Sophomore Expedition is intended only during the sophomore year. Deferrals are not typically allowed unless due to significant extenuating circumstances.

How do I sign up?

Directions will be given during your first semester at Cedar Crest about how and when to submit your intent forms.

Who travels with students?

Students are accompanied by the Director of the Sophomore Expedition, their professors, and staff coordinators.  We also use in-country support staff and guides.

Can a relative or friend accompany me on the trip?

This trip is open only to eligible student participants.

Where do we stay on the trip?  How are roommates chosen?

Students stay in 3- or 4-star hotels that are safe, clean, and centrally located.  Students can choose their own roommates or be matched with other participants.

What safety measures are put in place?

The college regularly monitors regulations and advice from the U.S. Department of State, the Centers for Disease Control, and the Overseas Security Advisory Council.  A site visit is conducted by the SYE director in advance and the Office of Global Initiatives maintains constant contact with local travel providers.  Students undergo extensive safety and pre-departure training before travelling.  All contact information and emergency numbers are shared with participants and their families before the trip.  During free time, students must sign out in groups and have a working cell phone.

The Sophomore Expedition played a huge role in my decision to come to Cedar Crest. What other institution is going to offer the opportunity to travel abroad — for free — while also being able to apply the experience to your studies? I thought that this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I’m not exaggerating when I say this was an enlightening experience. You never know how this will benefit you in the future.”

“You take so much more away from this experience than if you were sitting in a classroom. As an Education major, being able to work with kids in Costa Rica was a great experience. Actually being able to do it. To see it. It really makes a difference in your learning. “
