Explore Residencies 

European residency locations have been selected by faculty based upon each city’s significance of the creation of acclaimed works of literature. Students will connect to intellectual and artistic sources that will inform and inspire their development as publishable writers.  

Dublin’s rich history of literature, politics, folklore, and language provides an ample setting for study and inspiration.  

Students will study:  

• Irish literature, folklore, and storytelling traditions  
• Dublin as a setting and source for Irish writers  
• Contemporary Irish writing, dancing, theatre, and literary culture  

Field experiences have included The Book of Kells at Trinity College, the Museum of Literature Ireland, a performance at the Abbey Theatre, and excursions to sites such as Joyce’s Tower, Glendalough, the Hill of Tara, and the Boyne Valley.  

Accommodations and classrooms are at Trinity College in the heart of Dublin.

Vienna offers students a setting shaped by centuries of literature, visual art, music, empire, migration, and cultural exchange.  

Seminars will focus on: 

• Vienna’s literary café culture  
• The city’s unparalleled music history 
• Influences of the Habsburg Empire and the Austrian-Hungarian Empire on the European and global landscape  

Students encounter the city through experiences such as a literary exploration of Vienna’s Central Cemetery, an art-and-writing seminar at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, exhibitions at the Austrian Literature Museum, and visits to Schönbrunn Palace, the Wachau Valley, and Melk Abbey.  

Barcelona’s distinctive blend of Catalan culture, literature, art, architecture, and political history offers many ways to investigate the relationship between creative work and place.

During the seminar, students will:  

• Explore the city’s medieval history  
• Study Gaudí’s architecture and the role of Catalan language  
• Learn about the Spanish Civil War and its continuing cultural legacy

Field experiences have included a Spanish Civil War walking tour, a Modernisme walking tour and visit to the Sagrada Família, and an excursion to Montserrat. Locale seminars have explored Catalan literature, language, film, and cultural history.
